For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway takes place during the Spanish Civil War, which devastated the nation of Spain from 1936 to 1939. The conflict started after an attempted coup dà ©tat by a group of Spanish generals against the regime of the Second Spanish Republic, under the leadership of Manuel Azaà ±a. The Nationalist coup was supported by the conservative Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right, Carlist monarchists, and the Fascist Falange. The events of the story center around Robert Jordan, an American volunteer for the Republican guerilla band. Jordan and the guerilla band attempt to defend Spain from the nationalist coup and preserve their way of life. Donne feels that that humanity is interconnected and what affects one affects us all. As a result, we all are affected when one person dies, which implies when the bell tolls, it tolls for us all. Jordan recognizes that when one person is killed in Spain as a result of the civil war, the death affects every person through humanity as a whole. The mountain hideout is symbolic as a temporary refuge of safety from the turmoil caused by the civil war. The mountain hideout also signifies a serious dilemma for the Republicans. The guerilla band is trapped because they are blocked by Fascist troops below the hideout and enemy aircraft flying above. The mountain also symbolizes the beautiful scenery of Spain, which remains unaffected from the destructive effects of the war. However, the mountain is deadly because the snow reveals the location of the guerillas with their footprints. The mountain gives the guerillas the opportunity to recuperate and categorize their thoughts, but the characters are surrounded and facing annihilation from the Nationalists. Throughout the story, Rob ert Jordan faces the internal question of whether his participation in the war is worth the sacrifice of his life for a political cause.
